spooked. Just cautious. It seems Mr. Morales and his family have had a little accident. . . ."
"Ah! But what I don't get is why Kyna has the necklace. Why haven't we picked it up already?"
Bryan grinned. "That's the genius of my plan. This witch doctor is supposed to be some kind of superpsychic bad ass . . ."
Conrad loved it when Bryan tried to talk funky. With his British accent he sounded like Richard Burton doing Sly Stone.
"What if he has a way of keeping tabs on the necklace?" Bryan's grin slipped. "What if it gives off emanations?"
"Then I guess you'd be in big trouble."
"We would be in big trouble. That's why I had Morales pass it to Kyna; that's why I sent her off on this trip . . ."
"Yeah?"
"If anything happens to her, we'll know this witch doctor character can track the thing. If not, I can safely pick it up and use it to control the powers of the universe."
Conrad shook his head and grinned. "Gotta hand it to you, boss. You're one sneaky son of a bitch. But I thought Kyna was too smart to go for something like this. How did you talk her into it?"
Grinning wider, Bryan said, "Who said I told her?"
"That's cold. So how will you know if this bogeyman zaps her?"
"If what he did to Morales is any indication, it'll be all over the evening news."
"And if he just makes her disappear?"
Walking back to the table, Bryan pointed to a black clay bowl half full of clear water. In the bottom was a mound of black sand and an oddly shaped crystal. "I have other ways of keeping tabs on Ms. Rand."
Conrad walked over to the table and peered down into the bowl. "So what's she doing right now?"
Bryan frowned again. "It's not like turning on the telly. It's not that simple."
